This is usually the result of a mechanical issue that should be handled by a professional. Though you could remove the lock itself, and try and figure out the problems that are causing your lock to malfunction, you may make matters worse. It is better to A. Have a professional locksmith come out and fix it, or B. Have it replaced.
Lock Seizure
This problem most often arises when grime or dirt has been allowed to accumulate in the lock. You can attempt to do it yourself by slowly inserting a cotton swab into the lock to attract the dust. Do not use oil or grease, as this can lead to further, more severe clogs.
Key Will Not Insert
This comes up from many issues, but not to worry, as there are just as many solutions.
- Make sure it is the correct key.
- Maybe a poorly cut new key. See about getting a new one, or try out your original.
- There may be an object stuck in the lock itself. If this is the case, and the object cannot be removed via plyers, the removal of the lock may be necessary.
- The build-up of dirt or rust- Air can, or WD40 may be needed to loosen it up.
Key Broke Off in Door

Avoid this by slowing down, and making sure you are not moving your key to vigorously while locking your door.
