Types of Locksmith Scams – Watch Out For Locksmith Con Artists

The locksmith trade is no different than any other business in regard to that there are legitimate businesses and scam artists. We would like to provide you with some tips on identifying and avoiding these crooks.

Here are the types of scams that exist within the locksmith trade.

Identify Theft– As is an ever-present threat of using one’s credit card to pay for goods and services via online or paying to a private bank account. Make sure your company of choice has an office location and operates as a company, not just some person with a truck that offers locksmith services.

Cash Only Scam– One would think that since there are so many problems when it comes to credit card fraud that cash would be your best payment option. Where this idea has some validity, where it falls apart is its presentation. If a locksmith company says, “they only accept cash.” then this should send off your warning system. Cash limits the actual paper trail, and it restricts the chance of customers from being able to dispute charges.

Bait and Switch– This is a classic scam technique that does not seem to be going out of style anytime soon. The bait and switch is when the locksmith company quotes you a certain amount, say ten to twenty dollars, but due to “Additional equipment” needed, or claiming the job is “More complicated” they raise the price after the job has been completed. Make sure you get your quote after their initial investigation of the job is made.

Whole New Handle– This kind of scam is when the locksmith destroys the lock entirely to sell you a new and outrageously priced piece of hardware. This technique is utilized in getting someone back into their residence. A good locksmith will have the required equipment and the training to help someone gain access to their house without destroying the lock.

Anchor Pinning– When rekeying your locks, scammers will overcharge you by the number of pins needed to do so.

Duplicate Key– This is the most outwardly unlawful when it comes to locksmith scams. This scam is so the person who installed your locks will now have access to your residence, and will be able to rob or harm you. Having other security measures, such as a security system, installed will help warn you and dissuade others from attempting a home invasion.
